Missing My Run, Finding My Lesson: The Day One Marathon Reality Check

Because Every Day Counts, Even When It Doesn't Go as Planned

It was one of those days. You know the kind I’m talking about: the ones where work takes over your life, your to-do list glares at you with a smirk, and before you know it, the day has vanished faster than your willpower in front of a pizza.

Day one of marathon training, and I missed my morning run. Yep. Day one. The literal starting line. Cue the self-doubt parade: “Am I already failing? Is this a sign? Should I just give up and eat that pizza?”

But then, something clicked. And no, it wasn’t my knees.

Failure or Fluke? Let’s Talk About It.

Missing that morning run felt like I’d failed on day one of a challenge I’d been dreaming about for years. But then I thought: Is this really a failure? Or is it just my mind trying to convince me that perfection is the only path to success?

Training for a marathon is like assembling IKEA furniture. You start with the instructions (a.k.a. your training plan), and everything looks clear—until reality hits. Suddenly, you’re holding a piece that doesn’t seem to fit anywhere, and you’re wondering why you started this in the first place.

But here’s the thing: as long as you keep working at it (even if it’s with a brisk walk instead of a run), the pieces eventually come together.

90 Minutes of Brisk Walking > 0 Minutes of Excuses

Instead of wallowing in my "failure," I decided to use the little time I had—a precious 90 minutes—and do a brisk walk. It wasn’t the perfect run I had envisioned, but it was something. And you know what? It counted.

Consistency doesn’t mean perfection. It means showing up, no matter how small the effort. Even a 20-minute walk is a deposit in your marathon bank. And those little deposits? They add up to big wins.

Lesson of the Day: Just Show Up

Marathon training isn’t just about running; it’s about resilience. It’s about showing up for yourself, even when the circumstances aren’t ideal. Life will throw work meetings, bad weather, and lazy mornings at you—but the key is to adapt and keep moving.

Think of it like a Netflix series. You can miss an episode here and there, but as long as you keep watching, you’ll still get to the finale. (Also, much like a marathon, binging a series requires stamina and snacks.)

Why Day One Was My Wake-Up Call

This wasn’t just about missing a run; it was a reminder that the journey to the marathon finish line isn’t going to be smooth. Some days, you’ll feel like a superhero flying down the road. Other days, you’ll feel like a potato rolling off the couch. And that’s okay.

What matters most is the habit. The daily commitment to put one foot in front of the other, no matter the pace or the distance. Every step counts.

The Journey Is Just Beginning

So, day one wasn’t what I imagined, but it was exactly what I needed. A reminder that showing up is half the battle and that this journey will be as much about mental endurance as physical stamina.

If you’re on your own marathon (or any big challenge) journey, remember: the key isn’t perfection—it’s persistence. Now, excuse me while I go prep for day two.
